    • Merton Jackman grew up on his parent's farm in Dekalb County,
      Illinois.  He continue to work the farm after his father's death, married
      Alice E. Fenton in 1881, and in the spring of 1889 he moved his family to
      Sherburn, Minnesota.  Later that same year, he and his family moved to
      Jackson County.

      He owned a 320 acre farm in Petersburg Township, Minnesota.  In
      addition to farming and raising livestock, he also held directorship and
      owned stock in the Farmers Elevator Company in Alpha, Minnesota, owned
      stock in the Jackson Telephone Company and was an investor in and a
      member of the Board of Directors of the Petersburg Creamery Company.

      Merton also served 12 years as County Clerk of St. Petersburg
      Township, two years as County Commissioner, was a member of the school
      board, and a member of the Methodist Church.
