Wheeler, Veteran Moberly Printer BODY FOUND LAST NIGHT IN ALLEY Tread of Tire the Only Clue to What Car or Truck Struck Him Walter W. ("Walt") Wheeler, veteran Moberly printer, was found dead in an alley at the rear of the Allen Westfall home, 108 Tannehill, at about 11 o'clock last night. The body was lying about 20 feet back from the street, lengthwise of the alley and feet toward the entrance.  Imprints of a diamond tread tire, used either on a truck or large car, were found across the body, starting at the lower extremity and proceeding upward across the left chest and shoulder.  His left ribs were crushed and the left side of his face badly lacerated. Officials stated today that the circumstances of the death were "very mysterious," and that a thorough investigation would be made.  A coroner's jury has been summoned and, after viewing the body this morning, was excused subject to call after Prosecuting Attorney Holman makes the investigation. Wheeler's body was first discovered by Robert Westfall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Westfall, when he drove into the alley to put his car in the garage.  The Westfalls had just returned home from a trip to the Bagnell Dam. Westfall notified Deputy Sheriff Al Fleming, who lives nearby and Chief Sam Sparkman.  Mr. Sparkman called Coroner C.H. Dixon, who in turn allowed the body to be removed to the Mahan Funeral Parlors. CORONER'S REPORT According to Dr. Dixon, the examinations made at the scene last night showed that the car or truck which had passed over Wheeler's body had driven into the alley from the south, had gone on through onto Hagood street and then turned north.  In relating this incident to the coroner's jury this morning, Dr. Dixon pointed out that it would have been possible for the body to have been there when the truck turned into the alley and for the driver to have driven the car or truck over the body without seeing it. He pointed out that Mr. Wheeler, who was 57 years old, had been in poor health for some time, suffering from heart trouble.  He also told the jury that Wheeler had been known to drink to excess at times and though it was out of his way, he might have gone down the alley on his way home, possibly falling there, or being struck by the car which passed over him. (Page 4)  A third theory was offered by Dr. Dixon that the case may have been one of a hit-and-run driver. Dr. Dixon stated that Wheeler had been dead only about an hour when found.  An examination of his clothing showed that he had a billfold with $1 in it, 70 cents in change, a knife, his glasses, a watch, a small quantity of paregoric, and four tablets in his pockets.  Reports were circulated today that he was in the habit of carrying large sums of money, but officials asserted that they doubted very much that he had been robbed. It was also reported today that his nephew, Donald Wheeler, had stated that for sometime Mr. Wheeler had been threatening to commit suicide. This nephew said Wheeler left home at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and that at 8 o'clock last night he called Chief of Police Sam Sparkman and asked if he knew where Wheeler was.  Nothing else was developed, however, to support a theory of suicide. The coroner's jury called to give a verdict on the cause of Wheeler's death is composed of:  F.J. Robertson, Don Garvin, W.G. Butner, C.E. Surbaugh, Joe Cavender, and V.L. Copenhaver. A VETERAN PRINTER Mr. Wheeler  had been a printer since he was 10 years old.  He came to Moberly from Edina, Mo., in 1890.  Since that date he had been connected with the Moberly Monitor, Moberly Evening Democrat and the Monitor-Index.  He had been a member of the Typographical Union since its organization.  He had also worked as a printer at New Franklin for several years. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Alice E. Wheeler, 1119 High street, with whom he lived; four brothers, Rolla and Carl Wheeler, both of Moberly, Ed Wheeler of Albuquerque, N.M., and Frank, Milton, Ore.; and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Wheeler of Moberly and Mrs. Frank Crawford of Ottawa, Kans. The body will remain at the Mahan Parylors until time for the funeral services. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Mahan Chapel by Dr. E. V. Lamb, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.  The body will remain at the Mahan Funeral Home until after the funeral.

Wheeler, 72, a retired carpenter, died early yesterday morning at the Smiley Home, where he had resided for about a week. Mr. Wheeler was found dead in bed about 5 o'clock.  Coroner Thomas E. Barnes, who was called to view the body estimated that death had occurred about 3:30 o'clock. The coroner listed coronary occlusion as the cause of death.  No inquest will be held.  The coroner said Mr. Wheeler had suffered a paralytic stroke and had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Wheeler was born at Hurdland, Mo., but he had lived in Moberly for nearly 63 years. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Carrie Crawford of Ottawa, Kas., and two brothers, Frank Wheeler of Milton, Ore., and Rolla Wheeler, Moberly. The body is in the Mahan Funeral Parlors, where services will be conducted  at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning by Dr. F.C. Wheeler, Veteran Moberly Printer BODY FOUND LAST NIGHT IN ALLEY Tread of Tire the Only Clue to What Car or Truck Struck Him Walter W. ("Walt") Wheeler, veteran Moberly printer, was found dead in an alley at the rear of the Allen Westfall home, 108 Tannehill, at about 11 o'clock last night. The body was lying about 20 feet back from the street, lengthwise of the alley and feet toward the entrance.  Imprints of a diamond tread tire, used either on a truck or large car, were found across the body, starting at the lower extremity and proceeding upward across the left chest and shoulder.  His left ribs were crushed and the left side of his face badly lacerated. Officials stated today that the circumstances of the death were "very mysterious," and that a thorough investigation would be made.  A coroner's jury has been summoned and, after viewing the body this morning, was excused subject to call after Prosecuting Attorney Holman makes the investigation. Wheeler's body was first discovered by Robert Westfall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Westfall, when he drove into the alley to put his car in the garage.  The Westfalls had just returned home from a trip to the Bagnell Dam. Westfall notified Deputy Sheriff Al Fleming, who lives nearby and Chief Sam Sparkman.  Mr. Sparkman called Coroner C.H. Dixon, who in turn allowed the body to be removed to the Mahan Funeral Parlors. CORONER'S REPORT According to Dr. Dixon, the examinations made at the scene last night showed that the car or truck which had passed over Wheeler's body had driven into the alley from the south, had gone on through onto Hagood street and then turned north.  In relating this incident to the coroner's jury this morning, Dr. Dixon pointed out that it would have been possible for the body to have been there when the truck turned into the alley and for the driver to have driven the car or truck over the body without seeing it. He pointed out that Mr. Wheeler, who was 57 years old, had been in poor health for some time, suffering from heart trouble.  He also told the jury that Wheeler had been known to drink to excess at times and though it was out of his way, he might have gone down the alley on his way home, possibly falling there, or being struck by the car which passed over him. (Page 4)  A third theory was offered by Dr. Dixon that the case may have been one of a hit-and-run driver. Dr. Dixon stated that Wheeler had been dead only about an hour when found.  An examination of his clothing showed that he had a billfold with $1 in it, 70 cents in change, a knife, his glasses, a watch, a small quantity of paregoric, and four tablets in his pockets.  Reports were circulated today that he was in the habit of carrying large sums of money, but officials asserted that they doubted very much that he had been robbed. It was also reported today that his nephew, Donald Wheeler, had stated that for sometime Mr. Wheeler had been threatening to commit suicide. This nephew said Wheeler left home at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and that at 8 o'clock last night he called Chief of Police Sam Sparkman and asked if he knew where Wheeler was.  Nothing else was developed, however, to support a theory of suicide. The coroner's jury called to give a verdict on the cause of Wheeler's death is composed of:  F.J. Robertson, Don Garvin, W.G. Butner, C.E. Surbaugh, Joe Cavender, and V.L. Copenhaver. A VETERAN PRINTER Mr. Wheeler  had been a printer since he was 10 years old.  He came to Moberly from Edina, Mo., in 1890.  Since that date he had been connected with the Moberly Monitor, Moberly Evening Democrat and the Monitor-Index.  He had been a member of the Typographical Union since its organization.  He had also worked as a printer at New Franklin for several years. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Alice E. Wheeler, 1119 High street, with whom he lived; four brothers, Rolla and Carl Wheeler, both of Moberly, Ed Wheeler of Albuquerque, N.M., and Frank, Milton, Ore.; and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Wheeler of Moberly and Mrs. Frank Crawford of Ottawa, Kans. The body will remain at the Mahan Parylors until time for the funeral services. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Mahan Chapel by Dr. E. V.
