    Notes
    • Her father was Robert Carpenter of Westchester Co, NY. She first married Connell Tinney who was born in Cussewego Twp, Crawford Co, PA. They had one daughter, Helen Amelia Tinney, born in 1846. Connell left the family to join the California Gold Rush and it is presumed he died on the trail as he was never again heard from. The 1860 census shows that Helen Amelia "Nellie" Tinney and her mother, Eliza Amelia Carpenter, along with Charlotte "Lottie" Wright resided in the household of James Brooks in Huron, Ohio. James Brooks' occupation is given as "merchant". He does not appear to be a relative but he certainly deserves to be considered family because he took in three unfortunate women, and two of them were my great-grandmother and her mom(sic unknown who wrote this)! The 1880 census shows her the widow of Horace Halladay and living with her widowed daughter who is a dry goods merchant in Huron.
