I haven't communicated with you in the past couple of years, and was wondering if in your vast research you might have come across any additional info on WILLIAM AUSTIN , b Abt 1793, Conn (indicated by 1850 MI census) wife, Mary b Canada.  I am going to send a "lengthy" chronology of events
and or comments known about William and his family, hoping that someone out there might be able to identify this pioneer and his ancestors.

1835    Wm Austin purchased from R.B. Desmond what appears to be about 60 acres of Section 2, Town 11, Range 16, which is basically the town of Port Sanilac.

1840    The Fed census of the Twp of Lexington, St Clair Co., State of Michigan, including all that territory which later became Sanilac and Huron Counties does not contain the names of Austin or Burgess.  (John C Burgess and wife Hannah, parents of Mary Catherine Burgess, wife of Williams son Jedediah)

1844    William Austin built a log cabin near the shore just north of Bark Shanty Point and became the first permanent settler to live at what is now Port Sanilac.  (Oliver Raymond, author of "Port Sanilac Settlers", pg 167)Raymond is not sure of this date, as in another reference it is "about" 1844.  (Note also that Raymond also states on pg 167 of above reference...."Anthony Oldfield, a native of Lancashire, England, together with his wife Ellen and seven children, migrated to Cincinnati, Ohio in the year 1842.  Learning of the valuable timber then existing in the state of Michigan, he made a trip to this district in the summer of 1847.  He visited Bark Shanty Point and saw the then untouched stands of pine, oak, ash,
hemlock, and cedar and foresaw that money could be made by turning the forest into lumber.  OLDFIELD RETURNBD TO CINCINNATI AND INTERESTED HIS FRIENDS WILLIAM, QUENTIN, AND HUGH THOMSON AND JOS. MOORE IN THE PROJECT. They purchased from the government several hundred acres of timber land after forming a partnership and pooling their resources."  Could the above WILLIAM be William Austin?)

1845    The State Census for St Clair Co., Twp of Burchville includes William Austin, the copy is faint, but looks like 1 male under 10, 1 male 10 to 21, 1 male 21 to 45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 21 to 45. This is close to being coincident with our William Austin family except there should be 2 females under 10.

1846    In other notes by Raymond he says "William Austin is credited with being the first settler in the village proper.  He brought his family here about the year 1846.  The first house was built by Wm. Austin in 1849.

1848    Wm Austin purchased from Watson Walkin another chunk of land, maybe 40 acres, in Section 2, Town 11, Range 16, more of the village of Port Sanilac.  During the years that follow he sold off this land in small parcels.

1848    Sanilac Twp was organized (Town 11 North Range 16E) North of there another 12 sections originally belonging to Forrester Town.  Was then called Austin Twp....(Oliver Raymond)  William Austin was named the first Township Supervisor.  According to Raymond....."of the Twp officers, only Wm Austin
lived in what is now Port Sanilac."

1849    At the  second annual meeting of the Sanilac Township officers (perhaps residents) there were several new faces according to Raymond in his book on the town history, one was JOHN BURGESS.  The meeting was held at Sanilac Mills, about 4 miles south of Port Sanilac and six miles North of Lexington, we can't be sure of where Burgess lived at the time.

1850    Raymond, writing about the migration of the Oldfield family from Ohio to Michigan in 1850 says......"There were at this time only two buildings at this point.  One was Bark Shanty, abandoned for several years and in a dilapidated shape.  This shanty was plainly visible from the lake and had become a landmark and had caused the place to be called Bark Shanty Point.  The other building was a log cabin, built three or four years before and occupied by William and Mary Austin and their family.  This cabin was located on the north bank of the creek and the brow of the hill".  The creek has since changed its course but the original outlet was about 600 ft north of the foot of Main Street.

      The 1850 Federal census (taken Aug 29) shows William Austin, age 57, farmer with a real estate value of $200, b CT, with family:  Mary, 50, b Can; Jediah, 17 Laborer, b MI; Phebe 13, b MI; Sarah, 12 b MI; Edwin 8, b MI. living in Sanilac Twp, Sanilac Co., MI.  The same census has a Noah Austin, age 29 in the same Twp.  Also in this census we find the John C Burgess family in Lexington Twp of Sanilac Co.; John Burgess 40, m cooper, Real estate value = $200, b Canada; Hannah 40, b Can; Mary 20 b Can; Thomas 16, b Can; John 14, b Can; Martha 13, b Can; David 11, b Can; William 10, b MI;
      George 4 1/2, b MI.
      Notes:
1    Mary would have been 33 when Jedidiah was born, rather old to be a first born, we can assume that there are children older than Jed, or possibly another wife.
2    Jed was b 6 Oct, 1833 we believe and in MI according to all accounts, so where was the family in 1832 and on until 1840?
3    The Burgess family obviously moved to MI from Canada about 1840.  He should have had to obtain naturalization.  Do they show in any 1840 census?

1848-1850    The state legislature in 1848 authorized the organization of Sanilac County and designated Lexington as the county seat.  The territory embraced three Twp's of St. Clair County; Worth, Lexington, and Sanilac. Officers were elected in Nov 1849 and installed Jan 1, 1850.

1850    At the annual Sanilac Twp meeting there were 32 voters and Wm Austin was elected Treasurer.  In November of the same year Wm Austin resigned from his position as Treasurer.  (It is reasonable to assume that he resigned to move to Lexington and take the post of Tollgate Keeper.

March 3, 1854 Doctor Loop's ledger shows that he treated J C Burgess and family at least from March 15, 1854 until July 23, 1854. For about two weeks in mid July he saw J. C. almost every day, for three days twice a day, John must have been very sick.
Note: Dr Loops home is about 6 miles from Lexington, too far for John to visit every day if he is very sick and probably too far for the Dr to make house calls. This raises a question about where the Burgess family lived at the time.

Aug 8, 1854 Jedidiah Austin has an account in Dr Loop's ledger showing the doctor attended Jedidiah's wife (Mary Catherine Burgess) from Aug 8 until Aug 12. On Sept 23rd Jedidiah paid $3.00 of his $4.50 bill to the Dr in cash and the next day "Burgess" paid the balance of $1.50.
Note: We know that Jed is married some time before Aug of 1854 Was his wife pregnant? Calculation are that Grandma Halladay (Idella Austin) was born in 1856, two years later and the first born. Was there an earlier child, possibly stillborn? Why did Burgess pay the balance on Jed's bill, were they leaving to move to Montcalm County?

Sep 12, 1854 Jedediah Austin and wife, Mary, sell to John Shaw their land consisting of approx 1/4 acre, lying approx 3.4th mile south of Main Street (M46) bounded on the west by "the Lake road" and on the east by Lake Huron. (vol 2 p 536 Sanilac Co. Deeds)

Nov 1855 John C Burgess and wife Hannah, from Burtchville, MI., purchase from the State of MI for delinquent taxes, Lots # 9, 10, and 11 in village of Lexington, Sanilac Co.
Note: They are about to move to Montcalm Co., how come they are purchasing in Sanilac Co. at this time?

1857 "William Austin returned to Port Sanilac this year after living three years west of Lexington where he operated the gate on the Toll road. he had there acquired the nickname of "Tollgate Austin". Upon his return to Port Sanilac, Austin build a new home on the south side of Cedar Street, just east of the alley. It still stands and is owned by Cecil McMann." (from Raymond's Shingle Shavers and Berry Pickers, p. 35)

1860 In the Federal census of Lexington Twp of Sanilac Cnty we find pg 31, date June 9, 1860: William Austin, age 67, laborer, Real Estate value $300, b Conn; Mary Austin, age 57, b Canada; Edward Austin, age 19, laborer, b MI.

1860 Montcalm Cnty, Bushnell census, July 1860, Post Office Clear Lake, Michigan, Jedidiah Austin, 27, Farmer, Real Estate value $2000, Place of Birth, Mich; Mary C, 26; Ida, 4, Mi; Hannah 2, Mi; Lafayette, 1/12, Mi.

Next door we find Thomas Burgess age 26? b Can and wife Nancy 25 b Can and dau Rosa age 1, born MI.

1877 Thomas Burgess (brother of Mary Catherine Burgess?) served as supervisor of Marion Twp 1877 to 1880. (Biographical Album of Sanilac County, p 504)
