Calhoun County Land Records - James Halladay of Ontario County, NY, purchased from Lindley Brown of Calhoun County 160 acres in Bedford Twp. 6/12/1839. James Halladay of Calhoun County purchased from Isaac Kipp of Calhoun County on 1/21/1840 lot 7 of block 4 of Battle Creek Village. From the Willard Library, Battle Creek, Michigan October 6, 1839 - With brother, Wm. T. Halladay and wife and Abram and Jane Fiero, brother and sister of Mrs. James Halladay, came from NY state to home of brother Austin Dutton Halladay, at Jackson.  Had visited Battle Creek in 1837 and bought 160 acres in Bedford.  Family came in 1840.  Established brickyard and bricks were used in Noble block and Brown and Merrill shops.  Began hotel business - McCamly House. 1842 - Moved to Battle Creek.  Had traded farm his father had owned in New York for additional land in Bedford and divided this among his seven children. Children cast lots for the farms.  His father and mother, Calvin and Esther Fisher Halladay spent their last years here.  James Halladay traded hotel for property in Battle Creek township.  Married Mary A. Fiero, 10 children.
