    •       SUSANNA5 ADAMS,wife of Nathan Halladay was born July 11, 1778 at Suffield,Conn. but her family removed to Marlboro, Vt. when she wasabout five years old and she was brought up amid thehardships incident to pioneer life in Vermont.      When about 10 or 12 yearsold, she was out with her younger brother Rufus who behavedbadly and in order to control him she asked him if sheshould call a bear.  At that moment hearing a noiseand looking around she saw a large bear climbing over afence near her.  She had the presence of mind to seizeher brother and finally made her way to the house unharmed.       Upon the death of herhusband in Buffalo she was left alone with her six children.       Two of these, Rhodathe eldest and Lucius the youngest were taken sick and soonfollowed their father, and the widow with her fourremaining children was left to make her way back to Vermontas best she could.  But Susanna Adams Halladay wasequal to the occasion.       Descended fromthe  Adams and Underwood families she inherited someof their indomitable spirit and perseverance. Her goods andprobably her team were at the bottom of  Lake Erie andall her ready money had been used in the expenses incidentto the sickness and death of three of her family.       She was hundreds ofmiles from any one she knew and there were no swift meansof communication as now between her and her old home. In her trouble she wrote to her brother Capt. Simeon Adamswho sent his team all the long distance from Marlboro, Vt.to Buffalo and brought home his sister and her family andhelped them start again in life.  Let this act berecorded to the credit of Simeon Adams of Marlboro.       After returning toVermont the family necessarily separated. Henry learned thetrade of a tanner at West Halifax, Vt., Willard was putupon a farm; Almira learned the tailor's trade, and Susan, the youngest, remained with her uncle Simeon Adamsuntil her mother's second marriage.  Mrs. Halladayseveral years later married Henry Babbit, a farmer ofColerain, Mass. whom she survived.       She lived afterwardswith her son Willard, then a large lumber manufacturer atWest Readsboro, VT. but finally went to live with herdaughter, Mrs. Susan H. Wheeler at Rutland, Mass. where shedied Dec. 29, 1870 aged 92 years and 5 months and wasburied in the Wheeler lot in Rutland Rural Cemetery.       Mrs. Halladay was awoman of ability and quick at repartee. When she was morethan 80 years old a grandson who had just married broughthis wife into her presence and introduced her, saying,"Well, Grandma, this is my wife.  What do you think ofher?"        The old ladyquickly replied, "Well, I see that she has made one mistakealready."        "Oh! Grandma,"said the grandson, "You are too smart for me." [6]
