MRS. MARTHA WHEELER DIES; Funeral Will Be Held Sunday at Williams Street Methodist Church
Mrs. Martha Wheeler died at 10:35 o'clock this morning at her home, one and a half miles southwest of Moberly.
Mrs. Wheeler was 56 years old and is survived by three sons: Ray Wheeler of Moberly and John Wheeler of Whiting, Indiana. There are two brothers, Charles Lish of Gillespie, Ill., and Joseph Lish of Quincy, Ill.
Mrs. Wheeler was a member of the Williams Street Methodist Church and the funeral will be held from that church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. R. Harper. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
Burial 24 Jun 1923 Oakland Cemetery,Moberly,Randolph,Missouri,United States [2] Headstones Submit Headstone Photo Notes - (Research):Nothing is known of Martha's whereabouts between 1880 (when she lived in an Orphanage in Hannibal, Missouri, Home of the Friendless) and 1888 (married to John Wheeler and living in either Hurdland or Moberly, Missouri).
Another mystery is the birthplace of her parents. The 1900 Randolph County Census (ED#140, Sheet 4a) lists her father being from Illinois and her mother from Iowa; the 1910 Moberly Census (ED#154, Sheet 8B) gives her father's birthplace as Missouri and the 1920 Census (ED#157, Sheet 13b and 14a) gives the birthplace of both of her parents as Indiana. Alice's sister's marriage certificate says their father was from New York, and their mother from Ireland.
The 1910 Census also states that Martha had 7 children, only 3 living.
The 1920 Census (Randolph Cty, Sugar Creek, MO; ED#157, Sheet 13b and 14a) states Martha was living with her son, John H. and daughter-in-law, Eva, at 1055 Bond St. [3]

Family John Oscar Wheeler, b. 12 Apr 1867, Edina,Knox,Missouri,United States d. 4 Jan 1911, Moberly,Randolph,Missouri,United States (Age 43 years) Marriage Abt 1888 [3] - 1900 Randolph Cty, Sugar Creek, Missouri Census indicates John and Martha were married for 12 years making 1888 as the year they got married. There are no marriage records in Moberly for John and Martha, so they may have been married in Hurdland, Knox Cty, Missouri. According to the obituary for Carl Wheeler (John's brother), Carl and their mother, Alice, moved to Moberly from Hurdland around 1889. I assume this is when John arrived in Moberly. I have found no record indicating where or when their father, Charles died. He doesn't appear on any census records for Moberly and Alice is listed as a widow by the 1900 Census (Randolph Cty, Sugar Creek, ED#143, Sheet #20a). [2]
