Burial 17 Apr 1989 Hagar Shores,Berrien,Michigan,United States [3] Headstones Submit Headstone Photo Notes - Gertrude Mary (Bischof) Snyder lived virtually all her life contented with being a homemaker, wife, and mother. She graduated from Lucy Flower High School in Chicago, Illinois, where she received training as a Milliner. Her earliest work experience was in creating ladies' hats for the commercial market.
In the early years of her marriage to Harold Snyder, Gertrude worked for a time at the Tootsie Toy factory in Chicago, though I never knew just what she did in that position. After her second child, Judith, was born, she left the work force permanently. In later years, she tried her hand at selling Avon Products in Watervliet, Michigan, and did so for several years.
Gertrude was a home person. It wasn't until I was in high school that she ever took on a project outside the home, and that was as the membership chairperson for the Garvy School PTA in Chicago. It was at about this same time that she took driving lessons.
Born as a left-handed person, she was forced by the nuns in her parochial schools, to use her right hand for most activities. The end result of that was a certain awkwardness at doing anything which required fine motor skills. She tried her hand at many such hobbies -- knitting, sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, to name a few, but the results always were less than satisfactory to her because of her natural inclination to be left-handed.
In the last several years of her life she worked alongside Harold in the Snyder Sales business, keeping his business schedule on track, managing the bookkeeping, and tracking orders with Harold's various clients. Eventually, her cancer forced her to give up that work and Harold had to hire a secretary part-time to do the work mother had always done.
She died, as she had lived much of her life, quietly, in her sleep, and at home.

....North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores is correct. I believe Hagar Shores is in Coloma Twp., but I'm not certain. Berrien County is correct. Hagar Shores is not an incorporated place... just a wide spot in the road where there is a collection of houses. The cemetery is located on old US31, about half-way between Benton Harbor and South Haven. I never knew why my folks chose that cemetery rather than the one in Watervliet, where they lived. The latter would have made a lot more sense. Fortunately, they bought perpetual care for their lot, because it isn't a convenient place for any of the three kids -- ...
