Name Harold Howard Snyder Birth 24 Sep 1911 Detroit,Wayne,Michigan,United States [2] - Harold's birth certificate, in the possession of his son, The Rev. Robert C. Snyder, corrects two common errors of belief in the family. The first is Harold's middle name. Everyone in the family always thought it was Homer. On his legal birth certificate, his middle name is Howard. The second correction is in the middle name of Harold's mother. We had always been told it was Julia, but the certificate shows her as Edith Jewel Burt.

Much of his late-teen and early twenties' life was spent working in the lumber camps of the Upper Peninsula, until his famiily moved to Lapeer, Michigan. As a young man in his early twenties, he returned to school and acquired his High School diploma at Lapeer High School. One of his classmates was Louise Ross, who was eventually to become the wife of Harold's brother, Leslie. She reported that at the time, everyone thought Harold was quite courageous to go back to get what he had misssed.
Following high school, Harold attended Flint Junior College, in Flint, Michigan for a few semesters, but never completed his degree work. He became a self-taught authority in the then-new field of Packaging Engineering. Most of his working life was spent designing and working in the area of finding appropriate packaging forms for merchandise being shipped by railroad and truck around the world. He was one of the first to design paper-board cartons for the packing of tender fruits grown in the "fruit-belt" of Western Michigan.
Harold worked until he died. For the last twenty-years of his life he operated as a broker between lumber mills and corporations which needed access to warehouse skids and pallets. Harold designed the pallet/skid to fit the product being shipped, contracted with the lumber mill to build it, and then had it delivered to the corporation which had placed the order. Well-known corporations which used his skids included Sullaire and Whirlpool. Unfortunately, though he had a goal of living longer than his father did, Harold succumbed to the effects of adult-onset diabetes when in his early eighties.

....North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores is correct. I believe Hagar Shores is in Coloma Twp., but I'm not certain. Berrien County is correct. Hagar Shores is not an incorporated place... just a wide spot in the road where there is a collection of houses. The cemetery is located on old US31, about half-way between Benton Harbor and South Haven. I never knew why my folks chose that cemetery rather than the one in Watervliet, where they lived. The latter would have made a lot more sense. Fortunately, they bought perpetual care for their lot, because it isn't a convenient place for any of the three kids -- ...
