Stephen Skelton, rural Hartford, Kansas, passed away at the Wesley Medical Trauma Center in Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the age of 80.
Stephen was born on December 3, 1940 in Big Rapids, Michigan, the son of Max E. and Shirley (Baker) Skelton. He married Barbara Merritt at Dwight, Kansas on July 17, 1965. She survives of the home. He is also survived by sons, Max Skelton, Garnett, KS, Russell Skelton, Emporia, Jason Skelton, and Justin Skelton, both of Shawnee, OK; and daughters, Pamela Stithem, Reading, KS, and Kristina Rochelle, Shawnee, OK, 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Skelton served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He worked as a machinist at BPE, Inc. in Emporia for 36 years.
Graveside services will be held at the Chicago Mound Cemetery, Southeast of Emporia, on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. Military Graveside services will be conducted by members of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society or the Color Guard of Lowry-Funston Post #1980, VFW. Contributions may be sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, PO Box #175, Emporia, KS 66801.

A 77-year-old Gridley woman and an 80-year-old Hartford man have died following a two-vehicle accident about a mile south of Neosho Rapids Saturday morning.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., a northbound SUV driven by Dorene Metzger crossed the centerline of Kansas Highway 130 and collided with a pickup driven by Stephen Skelton.
Metzger was pronounced dead upon the arrival of emergency personnel to the scene. Skelton was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita and succumbed to his injuries Saturday evening.
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, Lyon County Sheriff's Deputies, Emporia Fire/EMS, Hartford-Neosho Rapids first responders and a Lifesave helicopter all responded to the scene, which closed the highway for over three hours. - [S1239] Kansas. A Lyon County man has now died following a two-vehicle fatality crash that occurred near Neosho Rapids Saturday.
According to the Kansas Highway patrol the accident occurred shortly before 11:30 am on Kansas Highway 103 less than a mile south of Neosho Rapids. An SUV driven by 77-year-old Dorene Metzger of Gridley was northbound and crossed the the center line colliding with a southbound pickup driven by 80-year-old Hartford resident Stephen Skelton.
Metzger was pronounced dead at the scene. Skelton was transported from the scene by a Lifesave helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Skelton died of his injuries shortly after 8 pm.
5:41 pm Saturday: UPDATE: One dead, one airlifted after crash outside Neosho Rapids
A Coffey County woman has died and a Lyon County man was airlifted after a crash near Neosho Rapids on Saturday.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says an SUV and pickup collided on Kansas Highway 130 less than a mile south of Neosho Rapids shortly before 11:30 am. The SUV, driven by 77-year-old Dorene Metzger of Gridley, was northbound and crossed the center line for currently unspecified reasons. Her vehicle hit a southbound pickup driven by 80-year-old Stephen Skelton of Hartford.
Metzger was pronounced dead at the scene. A Lifesave helicopter airlifted Skelton to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with suspected serious injuries.
K-130 was closed for almost four hours after the crash.

Kansas Highway 130 just south of Neosho Rapids remains closed after a crash Saturday morning.
Two vehicles collided on the highway near Road 150 shortly before noon. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, Lyon County deputies, Emporia Fire, Hartford-Neosho Rapids first responders and a Lifesave helicopter converged on the scene.
