      Hi Russell,

Guess what, we're related distantly via the Halladay's !

My name is Andrew Sinclair and I live near  Liverpool,England. My grandfather was Earl Halladay from BattleCreek, Mi.

My mother had often mentioned her American relatives andhow they had lost touch. I'd meant to try to find them for20 years since my grandmother died but had never quitefound the time. Anyway a chance search on the Internet whenlooking for an old school friend turned up your website.

It was quite something to be able to locate my grandfatherand be able to tell my mother I'd found out more about herfather than she ever knew. She dug put some old letters andphotos and I've been trying to piece together missing bitsof information ever since. It has been a rather excitingweek!

The full story is as follows.

My grandfather Earl arrived in England at the end of the1st World War. He met my grandmother May Exon(6-Aug-1897-26-Jun-1979) and they married on 21-Feb-1919. My mother Emily May Halladay was born on and is still alive today. She married my father John AndrewSinclair (31-Dec-1918 - 10-Jun-1992) on 28-Dec-1941. Mymother had two children, myself Andrew Duncan  and mysister Jean Susan .

Earl left home suddenly in probably 1920 after a row abouthim having another woman! Despite searches at the time theEnglish relatives were unable find where he went. As youcan imagine there was considerable shame and embarrassmentabout being an apparently single mother at that time inEngland. My mother recalls that for many years she was toldthat her father had been killed during war, math wasn't herstrong point !

My mother has a number of letters and photographs from theAmerican relatives to her mother dating from 1923 to about1929. I can offer you more names and in some cases ages andpossible birthdays for more Halladay's. The Americanrelatives had not heard from Earl up to 1929 and theletters mention part of Earl's grandfather's will.
      ....
Anyway to accurately place me and these other people mygrandfather was Earl Halladay. His father was William HenryHalladay and his grandfather was Henry Halladay of 147Kalamazoo Street, Battle Creek, Mi.

Earl's Aunt, Clara Halladay had two children Carl and Agnesand two grandchildren Francis and another girl.

Earl's other Aunt, Emma Morse (nee Halladay) wrote in 1925that her husband had been dead for 12 years and that shehad two children, John Henry aged 17 and Evalyn May aged15. She wrote in 1929 that she now had 3 grandchildren, Twofrom her son John Henry these being Dawn and John Allison .One from her daughter Evalyn being De Von Owen a boy whowas 1 year old.

Evalyn May wrote on 20-Jan-1928 to say she had married anOwan Graves on 15-Oct-1927.

Henry's second wife wrote in 1928 that she had 2grandchildren born about 3 months apart and that one wasborn on her 70th birthday.

      I have a few pictures.
      1) Emma and Clara,
      2) Henry Halladay and his second wife.
      3) A large group featuring, Henry and wife, Clara and herhusband, Clara's children Carl and Agnes and grandchildFrancis, Emma and her children John Henry and Evalyn May,and Walter Earl Halladay and wife Carrie.
      4) Part of a photograph of Earl Halladay my grandfather.

Walter Earl Halladay being Henry Halladay's son from hissecond marriage.
      ....
I'm fascinated in being able to trace my family back to theWalter Halladay but my mother is more interested in findingout anything she can about her father Earl although I guesshe probably changed his name to avoid being found. Irealize you probably get many letters and emails fromdistant relatives all asking the same question that I'mabout to ask!......
I can't thank you enough for publishing the family tree. Mymother is very grateful to you and to all the people whohave worked so hard to find out all these details. Hermother would never talk to her about Earl and she onlyvaguely remembers the letters from America arriving.
