Obituary - DR. C. H. WHEELER DIES AT HIS HOME
City's First Health Officer Had Notable Career
Dr. C.H. Wheeler, 86, original health officer of the city of Portland - until his appointment - the chief of police acted in that capacity - died last night at his residence, 6123 SE 18th avenue. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Walter C. Kenworthy & Co. mortuary. Interment will be in Riverview cemetery.
Dr. Wheeler, who retired from active practice only a year ago, had a widely varied and colorful career. He was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, August 28, 1849, and with his parents crossed the plains in a covered wagon to the Oregon territory in 1852.
He attended district schools in this vicinity then returned to Indiana for his major schooling, studying at Moores Hill college in the Hoosier state. He completed his medical training under Dr. George Sutton of the Ohio Medical college, graduating in 1875.
Office Opened Here in 1880
He opened offices then in San Francisco, and shortly embarked northward on a sailing vessel, entering the marine hospital at Port Townsend, Wash. From there he went to sea as a physician aboard a Pacific mail boat, tarrying for a time in private practice on St. Paul's island in Alaska.
San Francisco saw the young physician again in 1878, and in 1880 he came to Portland, where he entered the general practice of medicine, in which he remained engaged until his retirement.
The doctor was instrumental in creating the post of city health officer, which he filled for many years under various municipal administrations.
In 1912 he married Agnes A. Ritter of Portland. She survives.
He was on the staff of St. Vincent's hospital, and a member of the Arlington club and a number of fraternal organizations.
