1786 - Deacon of the Baptist Church Abel STEVENS would have been a remarkable man in any period.
1793 - Granted a total of 1200 acres. Stated Feb 1798 "improving lots and has built Mills on them,"
Early in 1793 he followed his older brother Roger into Augusta Twp. in the wilderness of Upper Canada and by 1803 ... a period of only 10 years....he had brought over 100 families to settle in two townships, in an area unknown to any white person in 1793 and still not surveyed. In a Petition 12 July 1796 he stated that half the townships of Bastard and Kitley had been granted to him and he prayed for the remaining half (not granted). He built a mill on his property on Upper Beverly Lake to serve the interest of the pioneering families. He mapped out and supervised the building of a 31 mile road from the settlement to Kingston over a very difficult terrain*. He was very occupied with his settlement and road so he chose to sell the mill site to his son Abel Jr. for £100 "east of a small creek running southerly into Mattis Mill Creek and north of Upper Bevgerly Lake" made 1799
Abel had discovered an iron ore mining area near by...the only one in the province...and laid out a blue print for its operation...all this in less than 7 years...and by 1803 there was even a non-conformist church established, he even established the doctrine "The Bible itself was sufficient for Faith & Practice, Church & State would be separate". No one knew this rugged land better than Abel STEVENS for he was completely at home in the wilderness as he walked,... walked alone- except for his gun - from one end of the province to the other, and back and forth to Vermont. He was not discouraged by the mysterious death in 1793 of his older brother Roger, with whom he had closely collaborated throughout the Revolution, or with the loss to the family of that brothers valuable 400 acres north of the Rideau. *correspondence C2808 S Bundle Reg 1 L3 Vol 453

ABEL STEVENS Born at Quaker Hill, New York, about 1750, Stevens served as a British agent during the Revolutionary War despite being enrolled in the rebel militia. After the war he lived in Vermont where, as an ardent Baptist, he became a deacon in 1786. Attracted by Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe's offer of land in Upper Canada, he moved to the province and settled in this area in 1796. A vigorous colonizer, Stevens within two years of his arrival had encouraged some 100 families, many of them Baptists, to locate in Kitley and Bastard Townships. He built mills and laid the foundation for the establishment of ironworks at present-day Lyndhurst. Stevens remained a leader in the Baptist Church in which he had been ordained a minister in 1804. Erected by the Ontario Heritage Foundation, Ministry of Culture and Recreation
